Early in my career I worked in firm based in the United Kingdom that had the same fate as the aforementioned organizations. I started out in commission-only sales (no sales, no paycheck). The CEO and sales director of this organization were demanding, and rather than support or develop people who continually produced lackluster results, they chastised them. They showed no interest in the employees’ well-being unless they were one of the sales ‘rock stars’ (translation: generating big profits). Their behavior perpetuated an ‘US vs THEM’ milieu. After working there for a few months, I noticed a level low morale and energy among many of the steady performers. Their enthusiasm had waned and complaints and absenteeism increased. They were paid no attention nor offered professional support unless they had a great week marked by closing a big sale. In addition, there was also a revolving door through which people coming in with big dreams would leave shortly thereafter feeling completely discouraged (I know this because I had ‘off the record’ conversations with many of them prior to their departure).

I felt in my heart that I could make a difference for those people who were not being cared for and approached the CEO with an idea. I believed that if the salespeople were offered training and development, they could start off their employment in this organization with a foundation, and over time this would reduce the turnover and increase the morale on the sales floor. This in turn, would increase sales. I proposed to design and implement a training program to coach existing salespeople and onboard new salespeople. The outcome was to inspire and equip them for a successful sales career in this organization. He agreed and a formal recruitment and training program was born…by me!

I did not know it at the time, but I was demonstrating qualities of conscious leadership (self awareness, eliciting potential in others, and recognizing the interdependent relationships in system) and within a few months, the communication between the leadership and staff improved, the salespeople became more engaged and evolved into a sustainable, high performing team.

A couple of years after initiating and implementing the cultural change, I learned of unethical practices the executive leaders engaged in that negatively impacted their customers, clients and staff.  Suffice to say that the leaders’ lack of integrity left an indelible mark in my heart, and I resigned as soon as I learned the news.  Eighteen months later they were out of business. After I resigned, I started my own business…more on that experience as we get to know each other!

The gift for me (and now for you) from all of this is that despite the non-fairy tale ending to that experience, I grew and learned so much about myself and the core competencies of effective leadership, and herein lies the reason I made the life-enriching decision to inspire and elicit conscious leadership in others so individuals can flourish and small businesses and organizations can achieve effective results and sustainable success!  I did not know it then, but I was practicing conscious leadership! Since that time, I have studied conscious leadership formally, and have embraced it personally. I have assisted individuals and organizations achieve incredible transformations in personally and professionally simply by their willingness to be open to the humanistic concept of conscious leadership.
